PITTSBURGH, PA (January 28, 2025) Pittsburgh Scholar House (PSH) announced today that it has been awarded a two-year $200,000 grant to enhance its Wayfinders Program. Funding for general operating support for the Wayfinders Program was provided by The Pittsburgh Foundation. The Wayfinders Program, PSH’s flagship program, provides economic empowerment, family enrichment, and academic support through a cohort-based model.
Through the Wayfinders Program, PSH provides a comprehensive level of two-generation support and guidance to single-parent families aspiring to create a better quality of life for themselves and their children. PSH coordinators provide support to parenting students seeking housing, transportation, childcare access, or tuition assistance, to help them achieve academic success while managing the responsibilities of parenthood.
“Pittsburgh Scholar House is extremely grateful to The Pittsburgh Foundation for their generous support,” said Dr. Diamonte Walker, CEO of PSH. “This funding will help PSH to build additional capacity around the Wayfinders Program with a specific focus on enabling degree completion and increasing educational access for single-parent students through our Wayfinders University. The funding will also strengthen the two-generational elements of PSH’s residential programming.”
For 80 years, The Pittsburgh Foundation has focused on improving the Pittsburgh region through philanthropy. Education is a basic needs area of grantmaking at the Foundation. It strives to ensure access to high-quality in-class and out-of-school time programs.
“Education is one of the most powerful tools to transform lives and create lasting opportunity, and our support of Pittsburgh Scholar House reflects The Pittsburgh Foundation’s unwavering belief in the organization to connect its participants to family-centered supports which promote their ability to thrive,” said Jamillia Kamara Covington, Senior Program Officer for Education at The Pittsburgh Foundation. ”By fostering access to post-secondary education, housing, childcare and trusted relationships, the Wayfinders Program eliminates barriers which prevent individuals and families from attaining generational prosperity.”
