Carlow University will offer scholarships to Pittsburgh-area students interested in careers in education, and who are also expecting parents or raising families.
The scholarships, aided by a $487,846 grant from the Heinz Endowments, will expand opportunities for credentialing and apprenticeships for students entering early childhood education (ECE).
The grant will provide financial support for students in two programs: College in High School (CHS) students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools’ ELECT Teen program, which offers support to expecting parents and students raising children, and parents pursuing an education served by Pittsburgh Scholar House, a nonprofit that provides academic support to single parents and children.
The grant will also help parenting students decide their best track after they receive their CDA, said Sherlyn Harrison, chief program officer of the Pittsburgh Scholar House.
“That’s the great thing about this,” she said. “It’s innovative, it’s creative, and it provides different pathways to meet students where they are, and depending on what their goals are and what their needs are. They may want to stop with the CDA, or they may want to go on and pursue higher degrees.”
